Die “The Book Of Souls Tour” aus 58 Perspektiven

Ich bin ein Iron Maiden Travelling-Fan und es ist das beste Hobby der Welt. Es gibt ungefähr zwei- bis dreihundert Leute, die ihr Geld für Reisen ausgeben, um die großartigste Liveband zu sehen, die es gibt. Für einige sind drei bis vier Shows genug, andere wiederum gehen auf viele Konzerte mehr, das geht bis dahin, die Band auf sechs verschiedenen Kontinenten zu sehen, wie es ein Fan aus Polen geschafft hat. Oder wie in meinem Fall, die „The Book Of Souls Tour“ 58 mal über zwei Jahre gesehen zu haben, was fast die Hälfte der ganzen Tour ausmachte. Die Hälfte von 117 Shows ist 58,5, also hab ich das fast geschafft!

Was macht das Touren für viele Leute so reizvoll? Obwohl Iron Maiden perfekt auf der Bühne sind, haben sie die selbe Setlist auf der gesamten Tour gespielt und nur ein paar Songs nach der Winterpause ausgetauscht. Manch einer mag ja denken, die selbe Show immer und immer wieder zu sehen, würde nach zwei- oder dreimal langweilig werden. Das habe ich vor meiner ersten großen Tour von 14 Shows in 2013 auch gedacht. Ich war mir sicher, dass ich an einem Punkt genug haben werde und vielleicht nicht so viele Konzerte hätte buchen sollen. Da lag ich aber völlig falsch, denn ich bekam nicht genug, noch lange nicht. Also addierte ich während der laufenden Tour noch eine Show dazu. Je öfter du gehst, desto öfter möchtest du es nochmal sehen.  Eine echte Sucht, glücklicherweise eine harmlose, abgesehen von einem leeren Bankkonto.

Abgesehen von der fantastischen Musik ist es für mich die Energie, die unglaubliche Energie, die zwischen der Bühne und dem Publikum hin und her springt, die Menge elektrisiert und dich nach der Show high fühlen lässt. Je näher du an der Bühne bist, desto besser fühlt es sich an. Was am meisten erfüllt, ist es, zusammen mit Steve zu singen, während er dir in die Augen sieht. Und ich mag es zu sehen, wie es die Jungs in der Band wirklich mögen was sie tun. Aber die Shows an sich sind nur die Glasur des Kuchens. Was das Touren so großartig macht, sind unsere Reisen, die Band zu sehen und all die geschlossenen Freundschaften auf der ganzen Welt, die man auf jeder Tour trifft. Diesmal habe ich es einfach Maiden überlassen, meinen Urlaub zu planen. Und sie haben mich zu fantastischen Orten geführt. Quer durch Europa, in die USA und zu Orten, wo ich schon immer mal hin wollte, aber das Geld dafür nicht aufbringen oder keine Begleitung finden konnte. Während der „The Book Of Souls Tour“ besuchte ich die mexikanischen Pyramiden, Monument Valley und war in Südafrika auf Safari, eben weil Maiden in der Nähe Shows spielten. Als ich schließlich nach China ging, nicht weil es mein Traumziel war, sondern eine einzigartige Gelegenheit die Band in dem Land zu sehen, wurde es zu einem fantastischen Erlebnis!

Es ist nicht einfach, eine persönlich beste Show zu nennen. Die Band liefert die selbe überragende Performance nahezu jede Nacht. Nebenbei gesagt, nachdem ich sie so oft gesehen habe, vermischen sich die Erinnerungen. Was eine Show herausragend macht, ist gewöhnlich nicht immer nur mit dem Geschehen auf der Bühne verbunden. Es kann eine besonders großartige Audienz sein, ein ungewöhnliches Venue, gute Freunde an der vordersten Absperrung oder manche Interaktionen mit der Band. Ich glaube aber, die beste Show der „The Book Of Souls Tour“ war eine der London Gigs in 2017, welche die Europatour beendeten. Die Band war völlig ‚on Fire‘ auf Heimatboden, aber was es nochmal besonders machte, war der Fakt, dass die meisten des Kerns dort waren. Die ganze erste Reihe bestand aus den reisenden Fans und es war toll, von Freunden aus aller Welt umgeben zu sein und die Show gemeinsam zu genießen.

Ein anderes fantastisches Erlebnis war für mich Nashville 2017, diesmal aus einem ganz persönlichen Grund – es war mein Geburtstag. Ich wollte schon immer mal eine Show auf meinem Geburtstag sehen, also wollte ich nicht die Chance verstreichen lassen und dehnte meinen Amerikatrip um eine weitere Woche nach vorne aus, um mit dieser Show meine US-Tour zu starten. Der Auftritt war super, obwohl die Amerikaner niemals so gut und leidenschaftlich wie die Europäer sind. Und am Ende des Konzertes wartete eine große Überraschung auf mich. Steve Harris, der Bandleader, kam zu mir an den Bühnenrand und wünschte mir „Happy Birthday“. Ich war total geschockt und konnte meinen Ohren nicht glauben! Ich konnte mir niemals vorstellen, dass etwas wie dieses passieren würde. Außerdem wusste ich gar nicht, dass er meinen überhaupt Geburtstag kennt. Es stellte sich heraus, dass ein gemeinsamer Freund ihm das steckte und als Steve mich also vorne an der Bühne sah, entschied er das zu tun. Unglaublich!

Es gab während dieser Show einen weiteren lustigen Moment. Viele Reisende bringen ihre Flaggen zu den Gigs mit, um zu zeigen, woher sie kommen. Und an einer bestimmen Stelle der Show zählt Sänger Bruce Dickinson einige Flaggen auf, die er grad im Publikum sieht. Ich bringe meine Flagge schon seit Jahren mit und bekam noch nie eine Erwähnung, bis in Nashville. Dort waren kaum internationale Fans und auch nur zwei Flaggen in der Menge. Bruce deutete auf meine und sagte:  „Schottland!“ Ich musste sehr lachen, denn die russische Flagge sieht kein bisschen nach der schottischen aus. Janick Gers und Steve Harris auf der Bühne lachten auch, weil sie wissen, woher ich komme. Steve zeigte auch auf mich, sagte „Schottland!“ und zeigte mir Daumen hoch. Um die Story fortzusetzen, sah Bruce meine Flagge während der nächsten Show in Chicago noch einmal, aber diesmal sagte er „Rumänien!“ Nun, das ist schon etwas näher dran und die Farben mögen bei der Beleuchtung unterschiedlich aussehen. Bei der nächsten Show machte Bruce es aber richtig, nachdem er für einige Sekunden auf die Flagge schaute: „Russia?! Are you from Russia?“ Diesmal zeigte ich ihm ‚Daumen hoch‘, um ihm zu sagen, dass er endlich richtig lag. Danach ignorierte er meine Flagge bis zum Tourende, wie er es all die Jahre zuvor getan hat.

Eine weitere Show verdient eine besondere Erwähnung, Mexico City in 2016. Lateinamerikanische Fans sind einfach wild! Du siehst niemals eine solche Leidenschaft in Europa, nicht mal in Skandinavien, wo man besonders auf Metal steht. In Mexico war es einfach krank! Wir waren wie gewöhnlich in der ersten Reihe, und es war wegen sehr dichtem Gedränge sehr schwer, diese zu erreichen. Die Menge war völlig außer sich und unglaublich laut, wie sie jeden Text sang, sogar die der neuen Stücke. Ein unvergessliches Erlebnis! Ich könnte nun weiter und weiter fortfahren, denn es gibt zu jeder Show eine kleine Story zu erzählen.

Die nächste Tour ist längst bekannt gemacht. Die „Legacy Of The Beast Tour“ kommt im Sommer 2018 nach Europa und geht 2019 in die restliche Welt, und wie gewöhnlich habe ich Pläne, sie so oft wie möglich zu besuchen. Ich kann es kaum erwarten!

I am an Iron Maiden travelling fan, and it’s the best hobby in the world. There are probably about two-three hundred people who are ready to spend their money to travel to see the greatest live band there is. For some 3-4 shows per tour is enough, some others go to many more concerts, ending up with such extremes as seeing the tour on 6 different continents, as one fan from Poland managed to do, or as in my case, seeing the Book of Souls tour 58 times over the 2 years, which made it half of the whole tour! Well, a half of 117 shows would be 58.5, so I’m almost there.

What makes the touring so appealing to many people? Iron Maiden, although perfect on stage, play the same set list during the whole tour, only changing a couple of songs during the winter break. One would think that seeing the same show over and over again would get boring after 2 or 3 times. I thought the same before my first big tour of 14 shows in 2013. I was sure that at some point I would have had enough, and thought that perhaps I shouldn’t have planned so many concerts. I was totally wrong, it wasn’t enough, far from it, even though I ended up adding another one show already during the course of the tour. No, the more you go, the more you want to see it one more time. A real addiction, luckily quiet a harmless one, apart from leaving your bank account empty.

For me, apart from fantastic music, it’s the energy, the incredible energy that bounces back and forth between the stage and the public, electrifying the crowd and leaving you feeling high after the show. The closer you are to the stage, the better it feels. One of the most satisfying things is singing along with Steve Harris looking you right in the eyes. And I love seeing how the guys in the band really enjoy what they are doing.

But the shows themselves are only the icing of the cake. What makes the touring so great is all the travelling we do to see the band and all the friends made all over the world, whom you get to see every tour. These days I just let Maiden plan my holidays for me – choose a destination from they touring schedule. And they took me to some amazing places – all over Europe, to the USA and to places I dreamed of going to for years but couldn’t justify the cost or find company – during the Book of Souls tour I went to the Mexican Pyramids, to a safari in South Africa and to the Monument Valley all because Maiden had shows nearby. Also I ended up going to China, not because it was my dream destination, but because it was clear that I will be a unique opportunity to see the band in that country, and it turned out to be an fantastic experience!

It’s not easy to pick the favourite show. The band delivers the same outstanding performance almost every night, besides, after seeing it so many times it all kind of blends together. What makes a show stand out is usually not connected directly with what goes on on the stage. It can be a particularly great audience, an unusual venue, good friends who keep you company on the barrier or some interaction with the band.

I think the best show of the Book of Souls world tour was one of the London gigs in 2017 that closed the European leg of the tour. The band was totally on fire on home turf but what made it extra special was the fact that most of the regulars were there. The whole front row consisted of the travelling fans and it was great being surrounded by friends from all over the world and enjoy the show together.

Another totally fantastic experience for me was Nashville 2017, this one for a very personal reason – it was my birthday that day. I always wanted to see a show on my birthday, so wasn’t going to miss that chance and extended my American trip by another week, making this show the start of my US tour. The show was great although American crowd is never as good and passionate as the European one. But at the end of the gig a great surprise was waiting for me – Steve Harris, the leader of the band, came up to the edge of the stage and said “Happy Birthday”. I was totally shocked and couldn’t believe my ears! I could never imagine something like this to happen, moreover I had no idea that he even knew it was my birthday. Turned out a mutual friend told him that it was and I was coming to the show, so when Steve saw me at the front, he decided to act to it. Incredible!

There was another funny moment at that show. Since a lot of people travel, they often bring their flags to the gigs to show where they come from, and at a certain point of the show Bruce Dickinson, the singer of the band, names a few of the flags that he sees in the audience. I’ve been bringing my Russian flag for years but never got a mention. Finally in Nashville, since there was almost no other international fans and therefore only two flags in the crowd, Bruce spotted it, looked at it for a few seconds and said… “Scotland”. I couldn’t help but laugh – the Russian flag looks nothing like the Scottish one. On the stage Janick Gers and Steve Harris were laughing too, because they know where I am from. Steve even pointed at me, said “Scotland” and gave me the thumbs up.

To continue the story, at the next show in Chicago Bruce saw my flag again, but this time he said “Romania”. Well, that’s a bit closer and the colours may look different with the concert lighting. At the next show Bruce finally got it right – another few seconds of looking at the flag and “Russia?! Are you from Russia?” This time I gave him thumbs up to show that he finally got it. After that he kept ignoring my flag until the end of the tour as he had done all the years before.

Another show deserving a special mention is Mexico City in 2016. Latin American audiences are just wild! You never see such passion in Europe, not even in Scandinavia where they are particularly into metal. In Mexico it was just insane! We were in the front row as usual, and it was the most difficult one ever, so much pressure.The crowd was totally on fire, and incredibly loud, singing along every line, even to the new songs. Unforgettable experience!

I could go on and on, there is a little story to tell about every show.  The next tour is already announced, The Legacy of the Beast tour is coming to Europe in the summer 2018 and to the rest of the world in 2019, and as usual, I already have plans to see it as many times as I can. Can’t wait for it to start!
