Schock und Euphorie

Bei den Schweden von Air Raid stehen die Zeichen wieder auf Sturm. Mitgründer und Gitarrist Andreas Johansson ist das letzte verbliebende Originalmitglied der klassischen Metaller und erfreut sich der wirklich gut laufenden Dinge in der Band, an denen er uns gerne teilhaben lässt. Nach Wechseln in der Besetzung haben sie mit “Across The Line” wieder ein Album am Start, das gegenüber dem Vorgänger “Point Of Impact” ein weiterer Schritt nach vorne ist und in Sachen Qualität an ihre erste, von den Fans sehr geschätzte EP “Danger Ahead” anschließt. Das zusammen mit dem Fakt, dass ihr grandioser neuer Shouter Fredrik Werner auch wieder auf eine tiefere Stimme baut, will Andreas natürlich keinesfalls als Rückschritt verstanden wissen, was er uns deutlich erklärt:

Joxe: Hallo Andreas! Wir haben uns noch nicht für X-CRASH getroffen. Stell die Band unseren Lesern doch einmal vor, wer spielt was bei Air Raid?

Andreas: Hallo, schön dich zu treffen. Das aktuelle Line-up besteht aus Andreas Johansson (Guitars), Magnus Mild (Guitars), Fredrik Werner (Vocals), Robin Utbult (Bass) & David Hermansson (Drums).

Joxe: Wie alt warst du, als du Gitarre lerntest? Hattest du noch mehr Idole als  Yngwie J. Malmsteen?

Andreas: Da war ich etwa zwölf Jahre alt, tatsächlich nachdem ich Yngwie Malmsteen & Ritche Blackmore zum ersten Mal gehört habe. Es war eine Mischung aus Schock und Euphorie für meine Kinderohren, dieses virtuose Spiel zu hören, haha. Es wurde aber erst seriöser als ich siebzehn Jahre alt war. Yngwie und Blackmore waren natürlich frühe Idole, aber ich wurde ebenso inspiriert von Shredderern der Achtziger wie Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, Joey Tafolla … usw.

Joxe: Gibt es einen speziellen Grund für Dich, dass du die Strat einer Flying-V vorziehst?

Andreas: Ich mag die Form einer Flying-V, die ist echt cool. Auf der anderen Seite ist alles besser bei einer Stratocaster, meiner Meinung nach. Sie passt einfach am besten zu mir, die Position des Lautstärkereglers, Korpusform, der große 70er Headstock, etc. Außerdem spiele ich Scalloped-Neck, und das wird immer am geilsten an einer Strat aussehen, haha.

Joxe: Du bist das einzig verbliebende Gründungsmitglied in der Band. Erinnerst du dich wie ihr als Band zusammen gekommen seid?

Andreas: Der frühere Gitarrist Johan Karlsson und ich kannten uns flüchtig von der Senior High School. Und als wir damit fertig waren, schauten wir uns beide nach einer Band um und trafen uns Ende 2008. Wir waren uns beide einig, eine oldschool Metalband zu starten. Das war klar, weil wir seit unseren jungen Jahren voll drauf abfuhren. Einige Monate später war Air Raid geboren und es ging los. Wir quälten uns schon im ersten Jahr wegen zahllosen Line-up Wechseln, aber letztendlich fanden wir die aktuellen Members Robin Utbult (Bass) und David Hermansson (Drums) in 2010.

Joxe: Das neue Album “Across The Line” ist endlich raus. In der Zwischenzeit gab es wieder Wechsel im Line-up. Erzähl und doch bitte etwas darüber!

Andreas: In Mitte 2015 trennten wir uns von Gitarrist Johan Karlsson wegen seines Zeitmangels und Ambitionen. Gitarrist Magnus Mild kam in die Band im November des selben Jahres. Kurz danach begannen wir mit dem Songwriting für “Across The Line”. In der Mitte des Prozesses entschied unser Sänger Arthur, nach langen Diskussionen über die Zukunft, die Band zu verlassen. Er wollte mehr Zeit mit seiner Familie verbringen, also respektierten wir seine Entscheidung. Das war ein harter Schlag für uns, und das Songwriting fror für einige Monate ein, während wir nach einem neuen Sänger suchten. Gegen Ende 2016 waren wir wieder da, denn wir fanden unseren neuen Sänger Fredrik Werner in unserer Heimatstadt Göteborg.

Joxe: Mit eurem neuen Sänger Fredrik setzt ihr auf sehr coole Vocals, die ohne spitze Schreie in die Richtung der alten Malmsteen Platten gehen und auch zu eurer ersten EP und Debütalbum. Sehr viele alte Fans mochten die Roughness in der Stimme von Michael Rinakakis. War das eure Intention?

Andreas: Das war absolut nicht unsere Intention und ich denke gar nicht, dass Fredrik wie unser alter Sänger klingt. Ich finde ihn sehr viel besser, weil er ein erstaunliches Gefühl und Musikalität in seiner Stimme hat. Es ist sehr melodisch und  auch kraftvoll, und das ist genau was wir wollten.

Joxe: Das erste Mal live sah ich euch in einer Scheune in Osnabrück auf einer privaten Party. Ihr hattet eine irre Performance und zu der Zeit war euer erster Sänger Michael in der Band. Nun setzt ihr eure Segel wieder in diese Richtung. Würdest du sagen, es geht wieder mehr zurück zu den Wurzeln?

Andreas: Haha Yeah, ich erinnere mich, das war ein wirklich irrer Gig: Aber nein, wie ich zuvor sagte, wir gehen nicht zurück in die alte Richtung. Die Musik ist klar anders als zu der Zeit, als unser erster Sänger in der Band war. Die einzigen Gemeinsamkeiten sind die Mid-Range Vocals und heavy Riffs. Ich schaue niemals wirklich zurück zu den alten Zeiten, für mich zählt nur die Gegenwart. Die Vergangenheit kann von unseren Fans gehört werden, während wir mit neuem Material das Feuer am Brennen halten.

Joxe: Ihr habt gerade euer drittes Album “Across The Line” raus. Wie glaubst du hat sich eure Musik seit Beginn entwickelt?

Andreas: Wir haben uns sehr verändert. Wir haben noch immer die heavy Edge in der Musik, aber es ist jetzt ein wenig melodischer und hörbar gitarrenlastiger. Das liegt hauptsächlich an unserem neuen Gitarristen Magnus Mild. Er ist einfach wie ich und er mag es, die Soli in neue Dimensionen zu pushen. Es floss einiges an Kreativität zwischen uns. Von “Point Of Impact” an orientierten wir uns mehr in eine melodischere Richtung. Es kam von allein, weil wir alle diese Art von Heavy Metal mögen. Außerdem ist die Chemie in der Band nun erstklassig. Es ist das beste Line-up, das wir jemals hatten.

Joxe: “Across The Line” tritt Arsch ohne Doublebass und Schreie. Bitte erzähle uns etwas über den Weg wie ihr die Songs schreibt. Was war bei diesem Album anders, als ihr an euer zweites Album “Point Of Impact” herangingt?

Andreas: Ich habe grundsätzlich alles auf “Point Of Impact” geschrieben, außer einige Lyrics. Die Prozedur für “Across The Line” was leicht anders. Ich komponierte die meiste Musik und Gesangslinien, aber manchmal auch in Zusammenarbeit mit Magnus (Gitarren). Die Lyrics wurden von mir, Robin (Bass) und Magnus in verschiedenen Kombinationen geschrieben.

Joxe: Ihr habt Songtitel wie “Hell And Back”, “Northern Light” und “Cold As Ice” auf der neuen Platte. Hattet ihr Saxon und Malmsteen im Kopf, als ihr auf die Titel kamt?

Andreas: Nein, es wurden Titel, von denen ich glaube, dass sie gut zu den Songs passen. Natürlich weiß ich beispielsweise von “To Hell And Back Again” von Saxon, aber es hatte keinen Einfluss auf Wahl für unseren Song. Wir leben in 2017 und es wird immer Referenzen zu etwas geben, was schon mal gemacht wurde. So ist das nun mal!

Joxe: Bei der Wahl des Coverartworks habt ihr euch für ein Bandfoto entschieden, statt etwas mit dem Planeten Erde. War es eure Idee, euch als die neue Band zu präsentieren?

Andreas: Der Hauptgrund war, dass wir nicht immer ein gemaltes Cover haben wollten. Fast alle anderen Bands tun das, also wollten wir etwas machen, das wir noch nie zuvor gemacht haben. Und wie du schon sagtest, die Idee mit dem Bandfoto ist ein guter Weg, das neue Line-up zu präsentieren.

Joxe: In Deutschland hören wir viel über Heavy Metal in Göteborg und Stockholm. Wie würdest du den Unterschied beider Bereiche für den selben Metal beschreiben?

Andreas: Musikalisch, denke ich, gibt es da keinen großen Unterschied, aber mental ist es nicht das Gleiche. Hier in Göteborg ist es mehr zurückgelehnt und ‘down to earth’. In Stockholm ist es generell mehr nach einer Großstadt, etwas kälter klimatisiert und distanziert. Das ist meine Erfahrung.

Joxe: Was passiert als nächstes bei Air Raid? Ihr werdet Ende September in Deutschland spielen, aber was ist noch geplant?

Andreas: Nach den Shows in Deutschland werden wir das für einen Monat in Europa fortsetzen. Es wird unsere größte Tour bislang sein und wir werden in elf Ländern spielen. Dann wird das Jahr am 5. November mit einem Konzert in Japan enden!

Joxe: Zum Schluss fragen wir immer gerne nach den fünf favorisierten  Alben für die einsame Insel. Welche Fünf würdest du mitnehmen, wenn die Reise morgen losginge?

Andreas: Rainbow – “Bent Out Of Shape”, Tony MacAlpine – “Maximum Security”, Leatherwolf – “Street Ready”, Yngwie Malmsteen – “Eclipse” und Europe – “Wings Of Tomorrow”.

Joxe: Hello Andreas!

We did not meet and having a talk for X-CRASH before. Please introduce your band to or readers, who is playing what in Air Raid?

Andreas: Hello there, nice to meet you!
The current AIR RAID line-up consists of Andreas Johansson (Guitars), Magnus Mild (Guitars), Fredrik Werner (Vocals), Robin Utbult (Bass) & David Hermansson (Drums).

Joxe: How old have you been when you learned playing guitar? Did you have more idols like Yngwie J. Malmsteen?

Andreas: I picked up the guitar at the age of 12, actually right after I heard Yngwie Malmsteen & Ritche Blackmore for the first time. It was really a blend of shock and euphoria for my kid ears to hear this virtuosic playing haha. But it wasn’t until I was 17 when it became really serious. Yngwie and Blackmore were of course idols early on, but I was equally much inspired by 80s shredders such as Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, Joey Tafolla etc.

Joxe: Is there a special reason why you prefer to play Strat in front of a Flying-V?

Andreas: I love the shape of a Flying-V, it’s really cool. But other than that, everything is better on a Stratocaster in my opinion. It just fits me perfect, the position of volume control, body shape, the big 70s headstock etc.
Also I play scalloped neck, and this will always look the best on a Strat hehe!

Joxe: You are the only founding member left in the band. Do you remember the first days, how you got together as a band?

Andreas: Me and former guitarist Johan Karlsson knew of each other very briefly from senior high school, and after it was finished, we were both looking for a band, so we met up in late 2008. We both agreed that we wanted to start an old school metal band. It was natural since we both were really into this since young age. Some months later, Air Raid was born and things started to roll. We struggled a lot the first year though with countless of line-up changes, but eventually we found the current members Robin Utbult (Bass) and David Hermansson (Drums) in 2010.

Joxe: The new Album „Across The Line“ is finally out now. In the time between you had some changes in the line-up. Please tell us about it.

Andreas: In mid-2015 we parted ways with Johan Karlsson (Guitar) due to his lack of time and ambitions. Magnus Mild (Guitar) was brought into the band in November the same year. Shortly after this we started songwriting for “Across The Line”. In the middle of this process, our singer Arthur decided to quit the band after long discussions about the future. He wanted to put more time for his family, so we respected his decision. This was a hard blow for us, and the songwriting went on hold for several months while we searched for a new singer. In late 2016 we were back on track again though, when we found our new vocalist, Fredrik Werner, from our hometown Gothenburg!

Joxe: With singer Fredrik Werner you count on very cool vocals going without peaks in direction of old malmsteen records and also to your first EP and Debütalbum. Many old fans liked the roughness in the voice of Michael Rinakakis. Was this your intention?

Andreas: It was absolutely not our intention, and I don’t think Fredrik sounds like our old singer at all. He is so much better for me, because he has an amazing feel and musicality in his voice. It’s very melodic, yet powerful, which is exactly what we wanted.

Joxe: First time i saw you live was on a private party in a barn in Osnabrück. You had a crazy performance and at that point in time your first singer Michael Rinakakis was in the Band. Now you set your sails in that direction again. Would you say, it is now back to the roots again?

Andreas: Haha yeah I remember, that was really a crazy gig indeed!
No, as i said before, we don’t go in the old direction. The music is clearly different from when our first singer was in the band. The only similarities are the mid-range vocals and heavy riffs. I never really look back on old times, it’s all about the present for me. The past is for our fans to listen to, while we keep the fire burning with new material!

Joxe: You just put out your third album “Across The Line”. How did the music of Air Raid develop since the beginning in your opinion?

Andreas: We have changed alot. We still have the heavy edge in the music, but it’s a bit more melodic now, and noticeably more guitar oriented. A big reason for this is our new guitarist Magnus Mild. He is just like me, and likes to really push the guitar solos into new dimensions. It was really much creativity flowing between us.
From “Point Of Impact” and forward, we headed for a more melodic approach. It just came very natural, since we all like this type of Heavy Metal. Also, the chemistry in the band is top notch nowadays, which makes everything better. It’s by far the best line-up we ever had!

Joxe: “Across The Line” kicks ass without doublebass and screams. Please tell us something about your way of writing songs. What was different in writing for the new album than you did before for second album „Point Of Impact“?

Andreas: I wrote basically everything on “Point Of Impact” except some lyrics. For “Across The Line” the procedure was slightly different. I still composed the majority of the music and vocal melodies, but it was also sometimes in collaboration with Magnus (Guitars). The lyrics were written by me, Robin (Bass) & Magnus in different combinations.

Joxe: You have Songtitles like “Hell And Back”, “Northern Light” and “Cold As Ice” on the new record.  Did you have Saxon and Malmsteen in your head while finding theses Titles?

Andreas: No it was just titles I thought fit the songs very good. Of course I know about “To Hell And Back Again” by Saxon for example, but it didn’t have an impact on the choice for our song. We live in 2017 and there will always be references to something that has been already done. Thats just how it is!

Joxe: By choosing a coverartwork you decided to take a bandphoto instead of something with planet earth. Was it your idea to present yourselves as the new band?

Andreas: The main reason is that we were tired of having a painted cover all the time. Almost all other bands do it, so we wanted to do something we’ve never had before. Also as you say, the idea of having a bandphoto is a good way to present the new line-up!

Joxe: In Germany we hear a lot about Heavy Metal in Gothenburg and Stockholm. How would you describe the differences in both areas for the same kind Heavy Metal?

Andreas: Musically, I don’t really think it’s much of a difference, but in mentality it’s surely not the same.
Here in Gothenburg it’s generally more laid back and down to earth. In Stockholm its much of a “big city” mentality, a bit colder climate and distant people. This is from my own experience.

Joxe: What is coming up next for Air Raid? You will play in Germany at the end of September. What else is planned?

Andreas: After the German shows, we will continue down in Europe for a month. It will be our biggest tour so far, playing in eleven countries. Then the year will end with a gig in Tokyo, Japan on 5th November!

Joxe: Finally we would like to ask you for five albums for the lonely island. Wich five would you pick, if the journey starts tomorrow?

Andreas: Rainbow – “Bent Out Of Shape”, Tony MacAlpine – “Maximum Security”, Leatherwolf – “Street Ready”, Yngwie Malmsteen – “Eclipse” und Europe – “Wings Of Tomorrow”.
